Ski Starts in 2 Weeks!

Fall sports are either wrapped up or winding down and we're just two weeks away from the start of ski season! A few things to know as we're approaching the first day:

1. The district is firm this year about registrations and fees being submitted prior to the first day of practice. If you were in a fall sport, you probably registered for Nordic ski when you registered for your fall sport. If not, just call the activities office at  320-616-2207 to add ski to your existing registration. If you didn't register for a fall sport or activity, you'll need to fill out a registration form online. Click HERE to do that. If you're unsure about what you need to do, call Gloria in the Activities office and she'll be able to help you.

2. The meet schedule is set! (On paper anyway...)  Look in the right sidebar for a link to our 2018-19 schedule and write it on your calendar in pencil because you know we're at the mercy of the weather and the schedule will surely change. 😃

3. Ski Swaps. If your kid grew a foot since last season, I feel your pain. There are a couple of ski swaps coming up soon where you can look for deals on used or last year's models -- boots, skis, poles, etc.
  • Forestview Middle School, Baxter. Nov 10 from 9:00 - Noon.
  • Halenbeck Hall (fieldhouse), St Cloud State University. Nov 10 from Noon - 3:00
If you're interested in driving a little further, there are a lot of swaps this time of year. Skinnyski has a comprehensive list of midwest ski swaps.

4. It's time to clean up the list of people who get blog notifications so if you're no longer interested in receiving text or email updates, let me know and I'll remove you.

Summer Training Program

Two options for summer training.

1. Signup for Central MN Nordic Summer Training with Joe, Hunter, and Dan. Monday at 4:30 or 6:00 for canoeing/kayaking and Tuesday at 6:00 for rollerskiing.  Great, affordable, local opportunity for cross-training and a lot of fun!

Sign up through Little Falls Community Services at the district office or ONLINE.

2. Coach: Kevin Brochman coaches at St Olaf in the winter.  He has worked with two skiers that have been NCAA Champions, Olympians and National Champions. He has worked with 13 skiers that have won gold medals at Junior Nationals.  Kevin has coached 4 Minnesota skiers to the Olympics (including Jessie Diggins), 3 who he worked with for several years.
  • 1984 & 1988 Olympic Team Member
  • 1989 World Championship Team Member
  • Member of the US Ski Team from 1982-1991
  • 25 Top 10 finishes at US National Championship Events
  • Junior National Champion, 1977, 4th Place at MN State Ski Meet
  • He has completed 4 marathons with a best of 2:39:59, best 10km 33:47
  • Four top 10 finishes in the Birkiebeiner, with a best place of 5th overall. That race he was 6.9 seconds from becoming the first American to win the Birke in 25 years.

He will be offering a summer training in St. Cloud again this year.  There will be two sessions per week:
  • Mondays from 10:15-Noon Classic with Kevin Brochman
  • Thursday nights with Issac Weiber from 6:-8PM.
Both of those sessions are at the River Bluffs regional park, near AirMaxx Trampoline Park.  If you want to add a 3rd session there's a session at Elm Creek on Wednesday mornings from 7-9AM.  That would also be skate.

Last summer three of our skiers participated in Kevin's summer training program in St Cloud.  Families coordinated car pooling to get them all there.  If you or your skier has any questions about the program, contact Jackson, Colton Y, or Cormac.

Charlie Banks & State Meet 2018

We had 8 skiers participate in the Coach's Relay, 9 skiers participate in the state meet, 2 alternates and a group of skier/fans attend the two days at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.  The snow was great and the temperatures were pretty mild.  Walking around the course yesterday, I was thinking that it's crazy how long it's been since we've had knee deep snow anywhere in our area.  😕  The Flyer boys came in 9th as a team (up 4 spots from last year) and one place ahead of Mora, who won our Conference Meet!  Hunter was All-State for finishing in the top 25.  Congratulations to Hunter, Jonah, Colton, Colton, Cormac, Brett, Jackson, Alice and Molly! All of the skiers on both days should be proud of what they've accomplished this season.  Congrats to Mattia for not just surviving her first year as Head Coach, but for coaching kids all the way to the state meet, and to Jordan for a great first year as Assistant Coach.  Congrats to Joe for another year of bringing our kids to the state meet, waxing more skis than anyone can count, and for being named Section 8 Assistant Coach of the Year!

Section Results & Photos

Skinnyski's Meet Coverage:  Jay Richards reports: Cold weather greeted racers in the Section 8 Nordic Ski Championships causing a delay in the start but temps quickly climbed along with sunshine to make for a great day of racing Tuesday. Strong performances in the classic pursuit by the top skiers in the girls race shook up the final results as Saidi Hamrin moved up from fourth to take the individual title and lead her team to a state berth and section title. St Cloud Tech's Gabbi Hennes took the runner up position as teammate Wren Scott-Lumbar round out the podium. Alexandria girls rode strong skate performances to earn the second team slot. St Cloud Cathedral's Alex Nemeth put on strong skate race besting last years champion Hunter Zupko by 17 seconds. Zupko would close the gap down to 10 seconds in the classic pursuit and settle for second. Hunter's teammate Colton Yorek rounded out the podium. All three skiers lead their teams to state berths, respectively. Results posted, along with photosets.

Going to state next week:  Alice and Molly, and the Boys team
