Charlie Banks & State Meet 2018

We had 8 skiers participate in the Coach's Relay, 9 skiers participate in the state meet, 2 alternates and a group of skier/fans attend the two days at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.  The snow was great and the temperatures were pretty mild.  Walking around the course yesterday, I was thinking that it's crazy how long it's been since we've had knee deep snow anywhere in our area.  😕  The Flyer boys came in 9th as a team (up 4 spots from last year) and one place ahead of Mora, who won our Conference Meet!  Hunter was All-State for finishing in the top 25.  Congratulations to Hunter, Jonah, Colton, Colton, Cormac, Brett, Jackson, Alice and Molly! All of the skiers on both days should be proud of what they've accomplished this season.  Congrats to Mattia for not just surviving her first year as Head Coach, but for coaching kids all the way to the state meet, and to Jordan for a great first year as Assistant Coach.  Congrats to Joe for another year of bringing our kids to the state meet, waxing more skis than anyone can count, and for being named Section 8 Assistant Coach of the Year!

Section Results & Photos

Skinnyski's Meet Coverage:  Jay Richards reports: Cold weather greeted racers in the Section 8 Nordic Ski Championships causing a delay in the start but temps quickly climbed along with sunshine to make for a great day of racing Tuesday. Strong performances in the classic pursuit by the top skiers in the girls race shook up the final results as Saidi Hamrin moved up from fourth to take the individual title and lead her team to a state berth and section title. St Cloud Tech's Gabbi Hennes took the runner up position as teammate Wren Scott-Lumbar round out the podium. Alexandria girls rode strong skate performances to earn the second team slot. St Cloud Cathedral's Alex Nemeth put on strong skate race besting last years champion Hunter Zupko by 17 seconds. Zupko would close the gap down to 10 seconds in the classic pursuit and settle for second. Hunter's teammate Colton Yorek rounded out the podium. All three skiers lead their teams to state berths, respectively. Results posted, along with photosets.

Going to state next week:  Alice and Molly, and the Boys team

Starting Procedure:

  • The Classic Race will be an Interval Start with one skier departing every 15 seconds out of 2 start lanes. Odd numbers starting in the left lane and even numbers starting in the right lane.
  • Order of departure for the interval start race has been determined by a list randomizer for each of the starting positions. Any unused stating spots will be removed prior to the race start.
  • The Freestyle Race will be a pursuit start with 3 starting lanes. Each skier is responsible to know their departure time and start their race at the correct time. Gatekeepers will be at the stating line to ensure a skier does not leave early. Each starting lane will have a poster listing bib numbers and departure times. There will be a large display clock with the running race time.
  • Coaches will not be allowed at the starting line for any races and are not allowed to countdown the start for their skiers. All Skiers are responsible for their own time start.
  • Each racer will be issued a cloth race bib for their race. The bibs will be collected sorted and reissued between the morning and afternoon races.

Timing, Scoring, and Tie-breaking procedures:

  • All timing will be to the tenth of a second using chip timing.
  • Pursuit race places will be determined by the order in which the skier crosses the finish line.
  • A skier must complete both races to receive team points.
  • A skier must complete the first race in order to compete in the pursuit race.
  • The first place skier will be assigned 100 team points and each subsequent finisher will be assigned one less point than the finisher ahead of them.
  • The tie breaking procedure to determine the advancement to the state meet by an individual will be by a coin flip.
  • The tie breaking procedure for team placing will be determined by adding the times of the top 4 pursuit skiers from each team. The fastest combined team time will win.
