Mt Itasca Photos, Results, etc

It was a great day at Mt. Itasca, with 16 teams and the nicest snow we've seen all season!  The girls placed 3rd and the boys placed 7th, with Hunter Zupko taking 1st place out of 100+ varsity boys!!  Big congrats to all of the kids on a great meet.

SkinnySki has their high school rankings updated for the first time since the pre-season.  Hunter is holding the 9th spot (and beat #5 and #10 at Mt Itasca).  Click HERE to see the individual and team rankings.

In the past, there's been concessions available but no guarantees, so kids should pack plenty to eat and drink.  It takes a little over 2 hours to get there.  HERE is a map link.

Technique:  Freestyle

                      JH Boys/Girls – 2.5k freestyle

Team & Individual Pictures - Dec. 14/16

Ski pictures will be taken next week by Christina Johnson Photography.  The plan is to start with Varsity and JV on Monday and finish the rest of the group Wednesday.  It's probably a good plan for all of the kids to have their entire uniform at school on Monday - just in case.

Order forms were distributed on Friday but if your skier wasn't at practice or the form didn't make it home, you can print one below.  All orders must be paid on picture day.

Cathedral/Sartell Invitational @Powder Ridge

Conditions weren't great at Powder Ridge today, but we're short on options for snow and everyone made the best of it.  Junior High raced first, followed by combined Varsity/JV events and the Rookie Race wrapped it up.  Congrats to the varsity girls on a first place finish and six skiers in the top 15, led by Amelia Kresha. Varsity boys finished fourth, led by Hunter Zupko.  SkinnySki results are a little slim this time, but you can see the varsity points and the top 15 varsity finishers for both boys and girls.

The Brainerd Dispatch article is posted but the results don't match SkinnySki.  I think there were some scoring discrepancies at the meet...we'll go with SkinnySki.  :)

Meets for the Week of Dec. 7

Last Friday your skiers found out that the meet on Thursday was moved to Tuesday and the location was changed to Powder Ridge in Kimball.  There's been another slight change in plans this morning.  We're now planning on taking 50 students down to Powder Ridge tomorrow (instead of the 35 we had originally planned for) and this will include some of the rookies.  This is the capacity of the bus, and since Joe isn't able to go, there will be no minibus.

Bus Pick-up Schedule:
  • MOLMS at 10:00
  • Middle School at 10:15
  • High School will leave at 10:30

These are all leaving times so be ready to go.

Next....our meet scheduled for Bemidji this Saturday has been officially cancelled due to snow conditions.  If anything comes up in its place we will let you know.

Practice tonight will be running and rollerskiing.  We will be waxing tonight and also will have a meal.  If a skier isn't racing tomorrow they can still work on prepping their skis and learn how it is done (and eat some great food)!

Nordic News - Nov 28

  • Sounds like they're making snow at Riverside Park but there may be some real snow coming in time for our first meet too.  It would be great if everyone could get out on skis before Thursday!

  • The SkinnySki website has a classifieds page that you can check out if you're still looking for used ski equipment
  • Touright Bicycle Shop has their ski gear in stock -- buffs, gloves, lobster mitts, beanies and lots of SmartWool.  Very competitively priced and with an additional discount for Flyer skiers.

  • Don't forget....Nordic Ski 101 for parents of new skiers is Tuesday at 5:30 in the HS Cafeteria.

Nordic Ski 101 - Tuesday at 5:30

If you're the parent of a new skier, you probably have lots of questions about the ski program, meets, practices, etc.  Or you might not know enough about what your skier is doing to even know what to ask yet!  The good news is, that's normal.  The better news is that a few seasoned ski parents are going to meet in the HS cafeteria on Tuesday, Dec 1st to answer all of your questions and probably a few you haven't thought of yet.

Nordic Ski Buy & Sell

The comment area of this post will be for people to list ski items that they would like to buy or sell.  This post will also be linked in the right sidebar in the Links area so people will be able to access it easily throughout the year.  Please delete your comment once you're sold your item or found what you're looking for.  Thanks!

Nordic News

As you're planning the week, mark your calendars for a Nordic Parent Meeting on Thursday at 5:30 in the High School Cafeteria.  There will also be an equipment swap so tag your items with your name and price and bring them with you.  Consider bringing any outgrown or no longer used skis, poles, boots and apparel.  Chances are good that someone will be interested in your kids' outgrown clothing that still has some life left in it. The black ski jackets that are in the Spectrum order can be re-embroidered with a different name too.  Spectrum will remove a name and re-embroider a new name in its place for a very reasonable fee.  If you know of former Flyer skiers who might be interested in selling equipment, please tell them to bring it to the meeting or contact Joe or Waz.

We're really happy to have a local business carrying Nordic equipment and apparel this year! Touright Bicycle Shop will be carrying a supply of smaller items such as lobster mitts, gloves, Buffs, SmartWool socks, etc and will be able to order equipment such as poles, skis and boots with a quick turnaround time.  They are also offering members of the Flyer Nordic Team a discount on all purchases so be sure to let them know you're a Flyer when you go in.  Touright is located on the corner of 2nd St NE and 1st Ave NE - just one block off of Broadway, between the library and Dominos.

I hear there's been some confusion about the Spectrum order form that was added to the blog.  There will be order forms available at the parent meeting, but if you want to download and print it prior to the meeting, you need to click the link BELOW the photo (or just click here).  You don't have to sign up for Dropbox in order to view the document.  Just ignore the prompts to join or get the app and click "Download" in the upper right corner on a computer, or click the download icon on mobile (see below).

SkinnySki's Nordic Season Preview

"Section 8:
Little Falls seems to dominant this section most seasons, and expect them to be back on form this year. The Brainerd and Bemidji boys and girls teams will be battling for the remaining team spots in a close contest. Little Fall’s Kendal Hendrickson is the top returning girl, but expect competition from a number of athletes. Hunter Zupko, Little Falls, is the best of the boys field, with some seniors expected to make him earn that top spot."

Hunter Zupko also made the pre-season rankings as one of the Top 10 boys in the state.

There's one change to Section 8 and it's pretty notable.  Mora is out (moving to Section 5) and Willmar is in.

You can read the entire preview HERE.

Sneak Peek - Ski Apparel Order

There will be order forms and samples for kids and parents to try on at the Parent Meeting on the 19th.  Here's a sneak peek at what will be available to order this year:

Nordic Season Kicking Off

The first practice for grades 6-12 will be on Tuesday, November 10th.  Since the forecast is for temps in the 50s on Tuesday, kids can probably plan on normal workout clothes and running shoes.

The parent meeting will be on Thursday, November 19th at 5:30 at the high school.  In addition to lots of info from the coaches, there will be an apparel order and samples for the kids to try on, and an equipment swap/sale.  If you have any equipment that you want to sell, price it and bring it with you to the meeting. If you know any LFCHS Nordic Ski alumni, please tell them about the equipment sale too!  They can clear some space in their parents' garage and make some money, and some of the newer skiers will be happy to get their own skis, poles, or boots.  The more gear we have there, the better it is so please spread the word.

The meet schedule is posted in the right sidebar if you'd like to check it out.  There are a few caveats to that list, which Waz and Joe will explain at the meeting on the 19th.

See you there!

Area Ski Swaps

With all of the fall sports in post-season, it's time to start thinking about nordic ski!  There are lots of ski swaps throughout Minnesota and you can find a comprehensive list on SkinnySki.  A couple of them are really close to home and you can hit them both on the same weekend if you like.

Saturday, November 14 is the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club's swap.  The sale runs 9:00-noon, but a line starts forming earlier than that so it pays to show up early.  That one has traditionally been held at Brainerd High School and that's what SkinnySki says too...however, I was talking to some BNSC members last night and they said it's going to be in the cafetorium at Forestview Middle School this year.

Sunday, November 15 is the St. Cloud Winter Ski/Sports Swap.  This one is held at the Halenbeck Hall fieldhouse from 1:00-3:00.  In addition to used equipment, Fitzharris and Revolution are usually there with discounted overstock and previous years merchandise.

If you have equipment that your kids have outgrown or don't use anymore, we usually have a ski swap among our LF ski families on the night of the parent meeting too, and there are usually lots of people interested in purchasing used equipment.

Easy Money for the Nordic Team!!

Julie Zupko is going to let the ski team use her Bieganek Insurance/Rosenmier Law/Hair Design parking lot to raise funds during the Craft Fair this weekend.  We need kids and parents to come help out -- it's just a couple of hours in the morning on either day of the weekend.  Contact Julie at julie@bieganek.com if you can help out.  Times are below...

Saturday 7:30 help arrive (person in charge 7am) - usually done by 9:30 - $10 a car need 4 to 6 kids and 3-4 adults for best outcome (2014 - 39 cars) kids on corners pushing traffic - one adult at alley edge directing and collecting funds (2 works great when busy but can get by with one) and two directing cars parking.

Sunday Start 8:30 to 10:30 - $5 a car   (2014 - 42 cars) need 4 to 6 kids and 3 adults for best outcome kids on corners pushing traffic - one adult at alley edge directing and collecting funds (2 works great when busy but can get by with one) and two directing cars parking.

The ski team also has another parking lot that we can use for fundraising next weekend!  It's the boatlanding parking lot across from the fire station.  Kari Masog is looking for volunteers to help with this...roughly the same timeframe as above but fewer volunteers needed since it's a smaller lot.  Please contact her at dms@dmsmachine.net to sign up.

Please consider giving a couple hours of your time.  This could easily bring close to $1,000.00 to our team but we need parents and kids to participate to make it happen.

Section 8 Meet Coverage and Photos

It was a tough day at Maplelag, with a 2nd place spot initially posted for the girls, earning them a trip to the state meet.  Then an hour later, the trip was taken away when a corrected error bumped them to third -- Mora, Cathedral and the Flyers all scoring within ONE point of one another.  The girls skied hard and represented Little Falls well.

Brainerd was the favorite in the boys' race and ended up placing second behind St Cloud Tech.  The Flyer boys finished just 3 points behind Mora, another very solid team, for 4th place.  The boys looked strong today and ended the season with great races.

Both Kendal Hendrickson and Hunter Zupko will compete individually in the state meet next week.

Congratulations to all of the skiers on a great season!
